Theme: Conservation and Management of Pinna nobilis
Background: Miramare MPA was established in 1986, recognised as a Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance in 2007 and became part of the Biosphere Reserve of Miramare and Coast of Trieste in 2014. The MPA is managed by WWF Italy, which carries out diverse conservation activities including the protection of marine species such as the endemic noble pen shell Pinna nobilis. This species, recently affected by widespread mortality events due to parasitic infection, has been found to grow in mussel farms.
Objective du project: The aim of the RESTORFAN project is to support the protection of Pinna nobilis in Miramare MPA through gaining knowledge and improving management efficiency with: a literature review on the biology and ecology of the species, monitoring abundance and state of health in specific sampling points, undertaking a survey local fishers and hatchery/culture experiments, and disseminating the results and knowledge gained to a wide audience.
