At the beginning of June, the Mediterranean Marine Protected Area (MPA) community gathered for 3 days of online workshops to discuss how the challenges faced by Marine Protected Areas in the years to come may be tackled. Over 600 members of the community registered for these Virtual Forum Sessions that are part of the Mediterranean MPA Forum participatory process held every 4 years. A total of 320 participants from around the Mediterranean and beyond attended the sessions, representing MPA management bodies, authorities in charge of MPAs, international institutions, NGOs, research institutes, economic sectors…

Three themes were discussed including Policy/Governance, Legislation and Enforcement, Management/Knowledge, Capacity and Awareness as well as Sustainable Financing and other cross-cutting recommendations.

Despite the high number of participants, the sessions were highly interactive and enabled the collection of point of views and proposals from MPA players. This input will help shape the recommendations that will be included in the Post-2020 Mediterranean MPA Roadmap.

The Roadmap will be finalised and adopted during the Forum process face-to-face event that will be held in Monaco from 29 November to 1st December 2021.

Key outcomes of the Virtual Forum Sessions will also be shared during the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Marseille, France, at the beginning of September.
