Project leader: AP marine environmental consultancy – Cyprus
MPA: Cape Greco
Theme: Habitat mapping
Context: Cape Greco MPA is a young MPA created in 2018 as a Natura 2000 site. Mediterranean biogenic concretions or bioconstructions (e.g. coral reefs, carbonate platforms) have an important function within marine ecosystems, since they confer protection of the coastal rocky shores and improve biodiversity and ecological processes by providing heterogeneity and structural complexity. However, there is still no information available on the composition, extent and state of health of these structures within the Cape Greco MPA.
Project objective: The project aims at mapping three important taxa that exist in the Cape Greco MPA. These include the Scleractinian coral Cladocora caespitosa, Vermetid reefs (Dendropoma sp.) and the bioonstructions Lithophyllum sp., which are all included in Annex I of the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC). The project will establish a basis for further research, the development of a monitoring programme and the implementation of conservation measures.
