Co-management – the formal sharing of management roles and responsibilities between two or more partners – is a set of approaches to protected area governance that has been used extensively around the world to address a suite of management goals.

But within co-management approaches, the degree of involvement of stakeholders in decision-making processes can vary considerably. In the Mediterranean, a recent study by MedPAN shows that only a small percentage of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) declare having a co-management system in place where stakeholders directly contribute to decision making.

This edition of «Science for MPA Management» provides an overview of where science stands regarding co-management of MPAs and provides clues for its generalisation.
