From 28 November to 1st December, close to 300 participants will meet in Monaco to set objectives and priority actions for the Post-2020 Mediterranean Marine Protected Area era.

On 29 November, the opening ceremony will be held in the presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.

The event is taking place in Monaco and online. Join us online if you haven’t already done so – around 350 participants have already registered online to bring their voice to this unique participatory process to shape the future of the Mediterranean: Register to participate online.

Please consult the overview of the programme to discover the richness of topics addressed. The website of the Forum www.medmpaforum.org will soon be going live with all the details about each of the 40 sessions on the agenda.

The objective of this hybrid Monaco Forum event is to finalise the content of the Post-2020 Roadmap for Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas. This operational document aims to be a living and regularly evaluated blueprint that generates the buy-in of all stakeholders needed to be involved in the implementation of its recommendations. The finalisation of the Roadmap will be the start of a wide mobilisation to ensure that 30% of the Mediterranean is effectively protected by 2030.

This event will conclude the 2020-2021 Forum process that started late 2020 with online consultations with the wider MPA community, that gathers managers, policymakers, scientists, economic players, regional and international organisations, NGOs and donors from all Mediterranean countries and beyond. Questionnaires and virtual exchanges made it possible to take stock of the current status of MPAs and share a vision on the priority challenges and actions to be addressed in the Mediterranean in the coming years.

These inputs led to the drafting of the Post-2020 Roadmap for Mediterranean MPAs in line with international commitments, and especially the CBD Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework under finalisation. The Post-2020 Mediterranean MPA Roadmap (and the Forum process in general) allows the actors at different levels to identify priority actions and coordination mechanisms in order to boost the implementation of international MPA objectives in the Mediterranean, and in particular supports the Post-2020 Regional Strategy for MCPAs and OECMs of the Barcelona Convention to be adopted by the Barcelona Convention COP 22 in December 2021. The Post-2020 Mediterranean MPA Roadmap process will set up an implementation mechanism follow-up and evaluation process with key indicators to monitor.

Two previous editions of this unique Forum process already took place in relation with the 2020 MPA targets. In 2012 in Antalya, Turkey, where the first Roadmap for Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas was developed, and in 2016 in Tangier, Morocco, where the Roadmap was evaluated and updated to boost the implementation by 2020 of the CBD Aichi Target 11 / Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020

More broadly, the Forum is an opportunity for networking and experience sharing within the wider Mediterranean MPA community.
