It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Patrice Francour, University Professor and scientist strongly committed to the conservation of the marine environment in the Mediterranean. He left on October 13 after a long illness.

Doctor of Aix-Marseille University, Patrice FRANCOUR was appointed Senior Lecturer in Nice in 1998, then Professor in 2002. He directed the ECOMERS laboratory for 10 years and has strongly contributed to its recent evolution into UMR-ECOSEAS (CNRS-UNS).

Passionate about marine biodiversity and coastal fish in particular, Patrice has developed many approaches based on in situ observation in order to better identify, understand and qualify the ecological quality of marine ecosystems and species and to promote their preservation.

He will have worked all his life to protect the Mediterranean that was so dear to him. Beyond his academic commitment, Patrice was also involved in numerous organisations and associations, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the Scientific Council of the Lérins Islands and the Monegasque Association for the Protection of Nature.

He was also an active scientist in the MedPAN network.

He will be missed.
