As part of the FishMPABlue 2 Project, the Cote bleue Marine Park hosted on April 4th and 5th, the first workshop in presence of the Project Partners (MedPAN, CoNISMa, WWF Adria, Nice Sophia Antipolis University, WWF Mediterranean, IUCN Mediterranean, APAM) and the Marine Protected Areas involved in the project.
The Project involves 11 MPAs from 6 Mediterranean countries (Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Greece).
The project aims to test some actions in 2017 and 2018 to optimize the management of the marine environment in close collaboration with artisanal fisheries in each MPA.
Through this project, an innovative governance toolkit will be tested and ecological, economic and social results will be measured by the scientific partners of the project in collaboration with the Pilot MPAs.
The objective of this first workshop was to present and discuss the methodologies that will be adopted to monitor the ecological, economic and social aspects of small-scale fisheries management in the 11 pilot MPAs. This workshop was also an opportunity for each MPA to present the general context of its management, as well as its experience in artisanal fisheries management.
The different monitoring methods were reviewed and the discussions allow to better understand the specific characteristics of each MPA and to clarify the next activities to implement in the coming months.
The FishMPABlue2 Project is the continuation of the FishMPABlue project (July 2014-June 2015). The FishMPABlue project analyzed the management of artisanal fisheries in and around MPAs and proposed an innovative governance toolkit to strengthen MPA management capacities. FishMPABlue2 aims to test this toolkit to demonstrate its effectiveness.
