Presented during the 2018 MedPAN experience sharing-workshop.
Small Scale Fisheries in Albania has developed remarkably since the 1990s. In 2010, the area of Karaburun and Sazani was declared as the first MPA in Albania. Though large-scale commercial fishing is prohibited in the MPA, the impact of the current fishing effort produced by Small Scale Fisheries on the coastal ecosystem and the fish community within the MPA is becoming important and needs to be considered together with the sport fishing activities. Based on previous and current projects surveys, we’ll a general characterisation of Small Scale Fishing inside and outside the MPA, together with a comparison of catch rates, catch composition, Catch per Unit of Effort (CPUE) of most relevant species, as well as the fishing techniques at two artisanal fisheries of Vlora, operating in and around the MPA. Following a co-management approach, and the support of MPA managers and scientists, the involvement of fishers is currently becoming important.
