The 10th Monaco Blue Initiative will be held in Monaco on March 24th and 25th 2019, under the presidency of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco. It will provide the opportunity to focus on solutions to develop Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), in terms of percentage but also level of protection and efficiency in view of the post-2020 Aichi Biodiversity Targets. Puri Canals, MedPAN’s Chairwoman, will be among the panelists.

The debates will also anticipate and propose through MPAs the framework of a new relationship that benefit both people and Nature. Three main topics related to MPAS will be addressed: “How can we – collectively – achieve and go beyond the Aichi targets of developing the protected surface, whilst ensuring efficient protection?”, “How does a coherent MPA network contribute to protecting species?”, “What is the next step after evaluation of ecosystem services and how do we integrate findings into blue economic development?”. Through the “Ocean Updates”, we will also have a closer look at MPAs under the angle of the High Seas preservation and Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdictions negotiations and Sustainable Development Goals and we will address the perspectives of the 5th International Marine Protected Areas congress in Canada, 2021.

The 10th Monaco Blue Initiative will be part of the 3rd edition of the Monaco Ocean Week (March 24th-30th), a week dedicated to Ocean protection.
