Presented during the 2018 MedPAN experience sharing-workshop.
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) fisheries certification and ecolabelling program is a mechanism for recognizing and rewarding sustainable fishing while incentivizing improvements. When trying to see their sustainable practices recognized, small-scale fisheries face specific challenges. Therefore, MSC has developed a suite of tools, such as pre-assessment projects like Medfish, to ensure small-scale fisheries access to its global program and associated benefits. Medfish uses MSC’s pre-certification tools in a strategic way to engage with multiple small and larger-scale fisheries at the same time, building awareness and bringing together key stakeholders involved in the Mediterranean fishing sector to design a bottom-up approach that helps to improve fishing practices in the region.
