Organized by the Because the Ocean Initiative, the Technical Workshop “Before the Blue COP” was held from 10-11 April 2019, at the Headquarters of the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition’s Fundación Biodiversidad, in Madrid.
The international conference brought together 50 participants from government and the scientific community. They discussed examples of ocean action that can contribute mitigating and adapting to climate change, improving the resilience of coastal communities, and increasing the conservation of marine ecosystems.
The workshop featured sessions and roundtables that addressed, among other issues: the state of knowledge concerning climate and ocean change; synergies and gaps in climate and ocean actions; and national perspectives on the ocean-climate nexus. Information on the role of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in climate change adaptation was also included in the workshop; Spain and the UK presented their respective experiences on MPA designation.
The main takeaways from the workshop will be complied with those emerging from other regional workshops and overall recommendations from the Because the Ocean workshops series will be brought to the attention of the 51st session of the IPCC, the 2019 UN Climate Summit, and the 25th session of the UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 25).
This issue of the Before the Blue COP Bulletin (Earth Negotiations Bulletin) summarizes the information presented in the workshop and main outcomes, including preliminary takeaways.
